As some may know I’ve been trying to stop drinking coffee lately and I’ve been substituting in other sorts of drinks like tea, soda and water. Well, I’m failing miserably in my attempt to be coffee-free so I’m going to try and document what I’m drinking every day and see if that helps. It’s the same principle I apply to my monthly budget. Not constraining spending/drinking coffee, but just noting it and making myself aware. It’s usually a pretty good system, so let’s give it a go shall we? This is a running tally I’ll try to keep adding to as the days go on

I started drinking coffee in 2005, with my first real office job after college. Before that, I absolutely HATED it.

It started off as a social thing, I was the new guy in the office and I wanted to get to know some people in what was a relatively small office. Everyone seemed to hangout around the coffee pot, so I started drinking tea.

Eventually I got tired of boiling my water in the microwave and brewing the tea, so I decided wanted to try coffee. I tried it, and OH MAN, I hated it! It was so bitter I couldn’t get through more than 3 sips.

At the time, I was dating a quasi-avid coffee drinker and she got me a gift card to Starbucks so I could try some not-so-bitter coffees. There I was, everyday before work, stopping at Starbucks to grab my White Chocolate Mocha (no whipped cream) and heading on my way.

It was delicious and I was hooked.

The Java Chip Incident

One day, towards the end of my gift card, I decided to try and get something a little more “coffee” . So I tried a Java Chip.

It’s important to keep in mind that this is January in Blacksburg, VA. So it’s pretty freezing out.

I get my coffee, and to my surprise, it’s a frozen drink. The lady behind the counter didn’t even flinch when I ordered it. Didn’t even seem alarmed that I ordered an iced drink in the dead of winter.

But anyway, I headed to work, drinking my freezing coffee purely out of principle. It was the last of my gift card, I had to finished it. It as actually pretty great, I was diggin’ the chocolate chunks.

By the time I got to work I so cold I needed some real coffee to warm up. Unfortunately, it was still gross and bitter. So I put something like 4 sugar packets in it to kill the taste, made it quite bearable.

After that I gradually reduced my sugar to 1 packet, and the rest is (as they say) history.

Quitting

From time to time I give up coffee / caffeine and I actually feel pretty good about it, but usually slip back in.

Maybe I’ll quit again next week.
